Hey Friend,
I get it, family photo sessions can feel a little intimidating. You want beautiful photos that actually feel like you, but the thought of getting everyone dressed, wrangling kids, and hoping the light cooperates can make even the calmest parents a bit anxious.
As a photographer based right here in Colorado, I’ve walked so many families through this. My goal is never perfect poses or forced smiles. It’s capturing the real stuff like the giggles, the messy hugs, the way your little one looks at you when they think no one’s watching. Those are the moments you’ll treasure years from now.
So let’s take the pressure off. Below is my honest guide: a simple checklist to help you prepare, what a session with me really feels like, and some gentle ways to calm the nerves so you can actually enjoy the experience.

Preparation doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Do a little at a time and you’ll show up feeling way more relaxed.

If it helps, I can send you a simple printable checklist when you book. Just say the word!
The best outfits are the ones where you all feel like yourselves. I usually suggest soft, coordinating tones that blend with our red rocks, sagebrush, and big skies so think earthy neutrals, gentle pastels, or soft layers. Nothing too matchy-matchy or with big logos.
Layers are your friend here in Colorado because the weather can shift. A light jacket or cardigan adds nice texture and helps if the wind picks up. For kids, bring that backup outfit just in case. And comfortable shoes are a must if we’re exploring!

If you’re not sure where to start, I’m happy to share my favorite styling tips or an online wardrobe guide once we lock in your date.
My sessions are designed to feel more like playtime than a photo shoot. Here’s how it usually goes:
We start with some easy chatting and laughing so everyone loosens up. Then we move around walking, playing, snuggling, exploring the location. I give gentle prompts like “mom and dad slow dance together like no is watching while the kids run around” or “just give your kiddos a big hug,” but I never want anyone freezing up.
Kids can run, be silly, climb on rocks (safely!), or have little meltdowns as that’s all part of real life, and often where the sweetest expressions come from. I handle the technical stuff and the gentle kid-wrangling so you can just focus on being with your family.
Most family sessions last about 45–90 minutes. We build in breaks if anyone needs them. The whole vibe is relaxed, patient, and full of joy. My job is to make sure you leave feeling good and not exhausted.
Almost every family I work with admits they feel a little nervous beforehand. You’re not alone!

The more you can relax and be in the moment, the more those genuine connections shine through in the images.

You’ll get a few sneak peeks within a few days, then the full gallery to enjoy. Many families tell me the photos help them slow down and really see how sweet this season is, even on the chaotic days.
Preparing for your family session doesn’t have to feel like a big production. With a little thoughtful planning and a mindset focused on connection instead of perfection, you’ll walk away with images that feel warm, real, and full of love… plus memories of an afternoon that actually felt fun.
I’d love to capture this chapter for your family here on the Western Slope or anywhere else you’d love to go. If you have questions about outfits, locations, timing, or anything else, just reach out. I’m here to make this as easy and joyful as possible.
