Have you ever experienced a moment that feels like a core memory — one of those little slices of time that somehow sticks with you long after the trip is over?
For me, meeting Madison and Andrew during a spontaneous stop at a castle in Scotland was one of those moments.
What started as a quick visit to explore and take a few photos right before one of our retreats turned into an unexpectedly memorable afternoon filled with laughter, beautiful scenery, and a little bit of magic.

While wandering the castle grounds, we noticed Andrew taking photos of Madison. She was wearing the cutest little dress and turns out trying to make all her ‘Outlander’ dreams come true. It was such a sweet moment to stumble upon, just the two of them enjoying the scenery and documenting the memory together.
Naturally, we asked if they’d like us to take a few photos for them.
Before long, we were wandering around the castle grounds capturing portraits in some of the dreamiest little spots. I can still picture Madison twirling in her dress with the breeze catching her hair, the old stone walls creating the perfect backdrop.
At one point Andrew even sported a traditional Scottish kilt we happened to have with us, which made for some really fun photos and plenty of laughs along the way.
Between the scenery, the light, and the relaxed energy of the moment, it felt like something straight out of a storybook.

One thing I love about planning out these retreats is that while we scout locations and experiences carefully, we also leave room for the unexpected.
Sometimes the best memories come from the moments you didn’t schedule — wandering somewhere new, meeting kind people along the way, and letting the day unfold naturally.
Madison and Andrew were one of those moments.
We hit it off so well that later, when I needed an extra hand at another retreat in New Zealand, Madison answered the call and convinced Andrew to come along for the adventure too. It was such a fun full circle moment getting to see them again and capture a few more dreamy photos with them.

A Shared Love for Scotland
One of the things that made that first meeting even more fun was discovering we shared a love for the series Outlander. Talking about favorite characters and moments from the show while standing in the Scottish countryside felt pretty fitting.
When you’re surrounded by centuries-old castles, gorgeous landscapes, and the kind of history Scotland holds, it’s not hard to see why that story captured so many hearts.

As a traveling photographer, I’ve had the privilege of capturing love stories in some incredible places, from the dramatic landscapes of the Scottish Highlands to the vibrant streets of London.
But experiences like this are always a reminder of what photography is really about.
Photography freezes time. It preserves the laughter, the wind in your hair, the unexpected moments that might otherwise fade with time.
And sometimes it captures the moment you said hello to someone new in a castle courtyard.

Fun fact: even though we’re all based in the United States, the first two out of three times we’ve crossed paths have actually been outside the country.
And honestly, that feels pretty fitting.
Because that’s part of the beauty of travel — the unexpected connections, the shared experiences, and the memories that stay with you long after you’ve gone home.
So the next time you find yourself somewhere new, surrounded by unfamiliar faces, don’t be afraid to say hello. You never know what kind of magic you might stumble into.
And if you ever find yourself dreaming about an adventure in Scotland or beyond, I’ll be there with my camera ready to help tell the story.
